The autumn breeze last week quietly blew away the heat of summer; the sudden typhoon this week has beaten against the windowpanes, yet it has not interrupted the vitality inside the classroom. As Socrates once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire". Teachers' explanations cut through the wind and rain, and the children's eyes shine with a thirst for knowledge. Typhoons may temporarily block the sun, but they cannot stop the transmission of knowledge, nor can they hold back the pace of growth.

上周的秋风悄悄吹走了夏日的燥热;这周的风暴敲打着窗棂,却没打断课堂里的热闹的交流。正如苏格拉底所言 “教育不是灌输,而是点燃火焰”。老师们的讲解穿过风雨,孩子们眼里闪着求知的光。风雨或许会暂时遮挡阳光,但挡不住知识的传承,更拦不住成长的脚步。

课堂直播之奇幻化学走进幼儿园

Recently, a fun chemistry lab session was held in the ECE (Early Childhood Education) homeroom. Mr. Satef demonstrated 2 magical experiments for the children.

近期,一节趣味化学实验课走进了幼儿部(ECE)的教室。Mr. Anwar Satef老师为孩子们演示了两个充满魔力的实验。

The first experiment, involving dry ice and water, illustrated the sublimation of matter—the direct phase change of a substance from a solid to a gaseous state, along with a comparison of the density of carbon dioxide (CO₂) (the gas produced by dry ice sublimation) with that of other gases. All the kids raised their hands, eager to touch the "magical smoke" (i.e., condensed water vapor mixed with CO₂). They kept shouting, "More! More!" The moment Mr. Satef poured water onto the dry ice, all the little ones exclaimed "Wow!" with curious expressions.

**个实验以干冰和水为材料,直观展示了物质的升华现象,即物质不经过液态,直接从固态转变为气态的过程,同时也对比了二氧化碳(CO₂,由干冰升华产生)与其它气体的密度差异。孩子们纷纷举起小手,迫不及待地想触摸那团 “神奇烟雾”(即凝结的水蒸气与二氧化碳的混合物),还不停喊着 “多一点!多一点!”。当Mr. Satef将水倒在干冰上的瞬间,所有孩子都睁着好奇的眼睛,发出 “哇!” 的惊叹。

The second experiment, using a Tesla coil, demonstrated electrical conductivity, the nature of electricity, and the movement of electrons in different atomic orbitals, these phenomena were visualized through the various colors emitted by glass vials (the colors result from electrons transitioning between orbitals and releasing energy as light). Our brave little Sea Dragons used their fingertips to touch the invisible electric current, which triggered sparks of light. Amidst the fizzing sounds and glowing effects, they got an up-to-close experience of electricity!

第二个实验借助特斯拉线圈变压器展开,演示了导电性、电的本质,以及电子在不同原子轨道上的运动规律。这些科学现象通过玻璃试管发出的多种颜色被直观呈现(不同颜色的产生,源于电子在轨道间跃迁时释放能量,以光的形式表现出来)。勇敢的小小海龙们用指尖触碰无形的电流,瞬间激起阵阵火花。在滋滋的声响与闪烁的光影中,孩子们近距离感受到了电的奇妙!

Introduction to Studio Art

If the science class for Kindergarten is a spark that ignites curiosity, then the art class for Middle School students is a clear spring that nourishes aesthetic taste. Recently, our 7th and 8th grade Sea Dragon artists undertook a large-scale painting project focusing on the natural phenomenon of iridescence, under the guidance of their Studio Art teacher Ms. Romero. The project is structured around five key phases: observation, sketching, experimentation, painting and editing. 

如果说幼儿部科学课是点亮好奇的星火,那初中艺术课便是滋养审美的清泉。近期在艺术老师Ms. Romero的指导下,我校七年级和八年级的海龙”艺术家”们正在开展一项大型绘画项目,主题聚焦于 “虹彩” 这一自然现象。该项目分为五个关键阶段:观察、素描、实验、绘画和修饰。

The artists are moving beyond simply painting shiny objects and instead explore the optical science behind how colors appear to shift in nature. This process fosters critical thinking, scientific curiosity, and artistic technical skill development. 

这些小“艺术家”们不只是简单绘制闪亮的物体,而是深入探索自然界中色彩为何会呈现出变幻效果的光学原理。这一过程有助于培养他们的批判性思维、科学探索精神,以及艺术创作才能。

Additionally, students investigate the work of renowned artist Wayne Thiebaud, who was a master at painting everyday objects with a subtle iridescent glow around them. Students practice the skills observed with a variety of media such as colored pencil, watercolor and finally acrylic paint to create colors that shift and change depending on the viewing and light angles. .

此外,学生们还研究了著名艺术家韦恩・蒂博的作品。蒂博是描绘日常物品的大师,善于在作品中为物体周围添上一层微妙的环绕光。学生们运用多种媒介(如彩色+铅笔、水彩,最终是丙烯颜料)练习所学技法,创作出能随观察角度和光线变化而变色的作品。
