The brief chill of last week has faded quietly, and the afternoons on campus have returned to warm and cozy vibes once again. The gentle sun shines down on the central amphitheater, casting sunlight on the busy students. A soft breeze sweeps through the tree-lined path, carrying the faint rustle of swaying lanterns. In every corner of the campus, the festive atmosphere of the New Year is spreading subtly, brimming with vibrant energy and tender warmth.

AP World History : A Cultural Taboo Class

Shared by Mr. Adam Rovin

My Grade 9 AP World History classroom needed a reason for increased engagement and historical understanding during their review sessions. Bam! I got a great idea… Let’s play a Taboo style game.

For those who don’t know, the game adapts the familiar party game Taboo into a fast-paced academic review where instead of memorizing definitions, students must describe a term without using the most obvious or commonly associated words, which forces them to truly understand the concept rather than rely on simple recall.

For example, a student trying to get their team to guess “Industrial Revolution” might be forbidden from using obvious keywords like factory, machines, or Britain. To succeed, they must explain causes, effects, and broader significance, such as changes in labor, production, and global trade. This encourages deeper thinking and strengthens students’ ability to make historical connections.

I can say without doubt the activity was highly interactive and successful with students working in teams and rotating roles in order to compete against the clock. The students enjoyed the fun pressure of trying to describe historical developments. Normally, activities can sometimes isolate some of the shyer students, but even the most reluctant participants became involved.

The activity is highly adaptable, and I encourage my colleagues to think about using the activity for review in the future. With such a high energy activity, I know my students will be more engaged and better prepared for their major exam.

College Admissions Parent Event:

Charting Your Course

The Department of College Admissions held a parent event this Tuesday night, focused on Charting Your Course: The 4-Year Path Planning for G9-G12. This is the fifth college admission theme of this academic year, hosted by Director of College Admissions, Ms. Ulrike Szalay. The event was specifically tailored for parents of Grade 9 and Grade 10 students.

In this session, we delved into the key priorities for each academic year across the four-year journey from Grade 9 to Grade 12, as well as the arrangement of summer programs. The core message emphasized throughout the talk was "Build with Purpose"—guiding students to identify their genuine interests, explore potential academic and career directions, and lay a solid foundation for future college applications. Additionally, we provided a clear timeline for standardized tests, helping parents and students map out a rational and efficient preparation schedule.

Ms. Ulrike Szalay stressed that the four years of high school are a continuous process of growth and exploration, rather than a last-minute sprint. For Grade 9 students, the focus should be on adapting to high school academics, cultivating good learning habits as a foundation year of high school. Grade 10 is a crucial period for confirming interest areas, stepping up to more challenging courses, and participating in targeted summer programs. Grade 11 requires students to deepen their involvement in core activities, make significant progress in standardized test preparation, and start researching college options that align with their profiles as this is the Peak Year. By Grade 12, the Applying Year, students should focus on polishing their applications, finalizing test scores, and completing submissions with confidence.

The event also featured a productive Q&A session, where Ms. Ulrike Szalay addressed parents' concerns about path selection, summer program applications, and standardized test preparation, offering practical and actionable guidance to support students in navigating their high school years with clarity and purpose. Our senior student Angelina A., who secured an offer from the University of Pennsylvania, also shared her experience in person, offering a comprehensive breakdown of her four-year high school planning with all parents present.

When I was in 9th and 10th grade, university felt very far. We all knew that it was the end goal, but I had no idea what my specific goal was, what type of university, what major. The College Counseling team helped me with that by giving me a roadmap and consistent support.

Starting early with them meant I could explore freely in 9th grade—trying new clubs and taking all the interesting subjects—without pressure. Despite not applying as a STEM student, physics became one of my favorite courses, that I took each year throughout high school, even now I am enrolled in Quantum Mechanics.

Through my 9th grade explorations, I entered 10th grade with a rough idea of how I want to define my year. My counselor suggested that I expand my magazine club to host activities, and I eventually hosted writing competitions and book exchanges.

Our college counselors also provided us with choices of summer programs, workshops, and activities to help our explorations outside of school. I got the chance to participate in two college fairs, talking to admissions officers from University of Chicago, University of California Berkeley, and more.
